Unit 3 - Mystery
Simple Past vs. Past Perfect
Sequence past events accurately by contrasting completed actions with earlier background actions.
1. Quick Reminder (from B1)
- I visited Rome last year.
- She watched that movie yesterday.
- I dropped my phone while I was running.
These Past Simple sentences provide the baseline for your timeline.
2. Introducing the Past Perfect
Subject + had + past participle (V3)
- She had finished her homework before the film started.
- They had never tried sushi before that night.
- I had lost my keys, so I couldn’t open the door.
Use Past Perfect to show that one past action happened before another past action.
3. Timeline Comparison
| Order | Past Perfect | Past Simple |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier action | We had booked the tickets. | — |
| Later action | — | We arrived at the theatre. |
Combine them: We had booked the tickets before we arrived at the theatre.
4. Signal Words
- before, after, by the time, when, already, just, never
When Past Perfect is optional
If the sequence is obvious from context or time words, the Past Simple may be enough. Use Past Perfect to avoid ambiguity.
5. Typical Patterns
-
Before + Past Perfect + Past Simple
- Before the conference started, the speakers had prepared their slides.
-
By the time + Past Perfect + Past Simple
- By the time we arrived, the movie had already begun.
-
Cause and effect
- She was upset because he had forgotten her birthday.
6. Common Mistakes
| ❌ Wrong | ✅ Correct | Why |
|---|---|---|
| I had went to the store before it closed. | I had gone to the store before it closed. | Use V3. |
| After he had arrived, we ate. | After he arrived, we ate. | Past Perfect not needed if order is clear. |
| When we had finished, we left. | When we had finished, we left. | Mix both tenses to show sequence. |
7. Practice
- Write five sentences using before and after to connect Past Simple and Past Perfect actions.
- Tell a short story where the Past Perfect explains a surprise or problem.
- Transform Past Simple narratives into more precise sequences by adding Past Perfect clauses.
Quick Review
- Past Simple = main past events.
- Past Perfect = earlier actions that influenced those events.
- Use timeline markers and had + V3 to keep your story orderly and clear.
